Design of the Levoit Core 400S

The Levoit Core 400S design offers a splendid and futuristic outlook, matching any ambiance indoors and adding value as an appliance within the room. It has a sleek white finish with a cylindrical shape and a spiral circular vent on the top. With a height of 20.5 inches and a diameter of 10.8 inches and weighing around 11 pounds, Levoit Core 400S is a lightweight air purifier that gets the job done. 

Much like the Blue Pure 311 Auto Levoit Core 400S has a three-stage filtration system and unlike the Blue Pure 311, it has a grille that spreads on the outer surface of the purifier. The air purifier also allows inlets from either side to place the hands in order to carry the appliance making the portability of the Levoit Core 400S much simpler and more accessible.

Levoit Core 400S has a purification capacity of around 403 ft.² and has a bottom-to-top air flow providing convenience wherever the air purifier is placed. The cleaning dimensions of the Levoit Core 400S are enough for a large room typically in a US household, such as the living room or a kitchen.

Control panel

The control panel of the Levoit Core 400S is one of the most convenient and the best control panel we found in an air purifier. The Levoit Core 400S has a circular panel. In the middle of the circular panel, the large square shape is separated for the timer display, and on top of the timer display we have the Wi-Fi indicator, and on the bottom check filter indicator and display lock indicator is available. Around the middle controls, you can find the air quality indicator rings, which illuminate the individual level of air quality in the surrounding. 

On the outer circle on top, the fan speed button along with the fan speed, indicators show four rates are available, and on the right the auto mode button. Next, you get the option to switch off the display followed by the display lock button, and on the bottom the power on button. From the left side top, the sleep mode button is available along with the check filter indicator reset button and the timer. This is one of the most efficient air purification controls that you can find in an air purifier.

Airflow and filtration stages

Levoit Core 400S uses a three-stage filter for its filtration process. This air purifier can be easily recommended as it does not contain an ionizer option which will emit ozone as a by-product. The first filter is the pre-filter that is generally in place to trap larger particles that are easily recognizable and to allow the next stages of filtration to efficiently filter smaller particles. After the pre-filter, the HEPA filter can be found which is effective in capturing smaller particles up to 3 µm. Finally, you can find the carbon filter, which is in place to Minimize or neutralize smoke odors and harmful gases, such as VOCs.

The most important feature that we recognized in the Levoit Core 400S is the missing ionizer feature which most air purifiers tend to include as an optional feature because of the ozone by-products that are emitted which causes harmful side effects for the lungs, etc. Therefore the filtration stages of the Levoit Core 400S are what we expect from an air purifier to be safe and to offer the same amount of filters that can do an efficient purification cycle.

Performance and filtration process

The performance of the Levoit Core 400S can be defined as impressive as we tested the air purifier for its worth. In our dedicated air purifier testing room, which is around 200 ft.² we placed the air purifier after having an initial air quality check in the room to see how efficiently Levoit Core 400S will function. we operated the purifier for around one hour with the fan setting at its highest which had a noise of around 55 dB. With the air purifier, we were able to clean and purify the area at a rate of 99% overall. 

The HEPA filter standard stayed true to its claim which filtered around 99.3% of particles that are smaller around 0.3 µm and 100% purification in terms of general pollutants. From the fan levels of levels two, three, and four we found that the level three sets can be the same as the level four. 

Therefore, if you are operating the air purifier, we would recommend level three as your highest setting without no compromises for efficiency compared to level four. In terms of filtering bad odors generally when using Levoit Core 400S at home, we found that it was able to efficiently clear out any cooking smells in the kitchen, proving the purification process of the carbon filter. 

Despite some claims from the Levoit Core 400S for the HEPA filter, integrated into the air purifier, which is said to be more effective than a traditional HEPA filter we think that the same HEPA filter standard applies to this air purifier as well, as we did not see any significant shift in cleaning pollutants.

Noise levels

The Levoit Core 400S contains primarily four fan speeds with an optional sleep mode, allowing silent performance when needed. The sound of the air purifier kept a rate of 45 to 46 dB in sleep mode, which was quiet and without any disturbance. When the fourth or the third fan speeds are activated, the sound can go up to 55 to 60 dB which is still reduced noise when compared to some of the air purifiers leading in the market. Ranging from 45 to 60 dB each fan speed will put on a quiet and comfortable operation compared to the competitor counterparts.

Maintenance of Levoit Core 400S

Cleaning the air purifier was relatively easy. With a simple removal of the bottom panel from its screws the cylindrical air filter slide out. Vacuuming the filters can help to keep the filter effective for a long time. Don’t vacuum the carbon filter as it consists of carbon particles. Filter replacements are recommended to be done once a year and replacements should be carried out once a year.

Operating costs

Besides the filter replacements, the energy consumption of the air purifier should be monitored. As high fan speeds can consume more energy that may result in higher costs. Surprisingly the Levoit Core 400S has 38W and much less than most air purifiers in the market. This wattage will hardly factor in for the wallet at the end of the month. If the filter replacements are carried out on time and proper cleaning can be done the air purifier is beneficial for a longer period.
